Wrinkles, a natural part of aging, are most prominent on sun-exposed skin such as the face, neck, hands and forearms.

Although genetics primarily determine the structure and texture of the skin, exposure to sunlight is one of the main causes of wrinkles, especially for people with fair skin. Pollutants and smoke also contribute to wrinkling.

Wrinkles are the lines and creases that form on the skin. Some wrinkles can become slits or deep furrows and can be especially visible around the eyes, mouth, and neck.



Wrinkles are caused by a combination of factors – some can control, others cannot:

  • Age – As you age, your skin naturally becomes less elastic and more fragile. Decreased production of natural oils dries out the skin and makes it look more wrinkled. The fat in the deeper layers of the skin decreases. This causes sagging skin, more pronounced lines and cracks.
  • Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light - Ultraviolet radiation, which accelerates the natural aging process, is the main cause of premature aging. Exposure to ultraviolet light breaks the skin's connective tissue – collagen and elastin fibers, which lie in the deepest layer of the skin (dermis). Without supporting connective tissue, your skin loses strength and elasticity. The skin then begins to prematurely sag and wrinkle.
  • Smoke - Smoking can accelerate the skin's natural aging process, contributing to the appearance of wrinkles. This could be due to the effect of smoking on collagen.
  • Repeated facial expressions – Facial movements and expressions, such as squinting or smiling, lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Every time you use a facial muscle, a groove forms under the surface of the skin. And as the skin ages, it loses elasticity and can't get back into place. These lines become permanent features on the face.
