Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a commemorative date that is celebrated in Portugal, on the first Sunday of the month of May.

In Portugal, Mother's Day was celebrated for a long time on December 8, the day of the Immaculate Conception, the conception of Jesus Christ through the Virgin Mary. Then, the celebration passed to the month of May, in honor of the mother of Jesus.

Ancient Rome honored Cybele, the mother of all gods, for three days. In classical Greece, the festival was dedicated to the goddess Reia - more or less equivalent to Cybele, mother of all Greek gods.

The idea of Mother's Day in the USA came from a feminist, Anna Reese Jarvis, who in 1907 launched a movement aimed at creating "National Mother's Day". The celebration began in his town of Grafton, Philadelphia on his own mother's birthday. In the following years, the entire state of Philadelphia began to celebrate this day. Anna's campaign spread across the country and in 1911, Mother's Day was celebrated throughout America.

In 1914, the feminist convinces the president to declare Mother's Day a national holiday, on the second Sunday in May, as in Brazil, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Japan, Turkey and others.

Spain, which also celebrated this day on December 8, now celebrates on the first Sunday in May, as does Portugal.

Mozambique, Cape Verde, Angola, Lithuania and Hungary also choose to celebrate this day on the first Sunday in May.

To honor the mothers, Colombia, France and Sweden prefer the last Sunday in May. In India, the celebration of mothers is in October, as well as in Argentina and Belarus. Norway chose February. Belgium and Costa Rica also pay tribute to the mother of Christ, commemorating this day on August 15, which marks the assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is when the mother of Christ ascends to heaven to join her son.

The idea of creating a Mother's Day was born in the United States, but it is transversal to all cultures, religions and countries.

On this day, it is common for children to offer their mothers gifts in order to show how much they like them and to thank them for their commitment and dedication.

It is a date dedicated to all mothers and serves to reinforce their children's love for them.
